Overview

Abbott Elementary is a 2021 mockumentary sitcom television series created by Quinta Brunson for ABC. The first season is set at Abbott Elementary, a predominantly Black, underfunded public school in Philadelphia. The first season follows a group of dedicated, passionate teachers as they try to educate their students despite a lack of resources and a clueless principal. The first season introduces the characters: Janine Teagues (Quinta Brunson), a naive, optimistic, and enthusiastic second-grade teacher; Gregory Eddie (Tyler James Williams), a handsome, strait-laced, and reluctant substitute teacher; Ava Coleman (Janelle James), the selfish, incompetent, and hilarious principal; Barbara Howard (Sheryl Lee Ralph), a veteran, respected, and beloved kindergarten teacher; Melissa Schemmenti (Lisa Ann Walter), a tough, street-smart second-grade teacher; and Jacob Hill (Chris Perfetti), a well-meaning, awkward history teacher. The first season was a critical and commercial success, winning a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress for Sheryl Lee Ralph. The show is a must-see for fans of mockumentary sitcoms and for anyone who loves a good, heartwarming comedy.
