Overview

Triangle of Sadness is a 2022 satirical black comedy film written and directed by Ruben Östlund. The film won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. The film is set on a luxury yacht, and it follows a group of super-wealthy people as their cruise goes disastrously wrong. The film is divided into three parts. The first part follows Carl (Harris Dickinson) and Yaya (Charlbi Dean), a young, beautiful, influencer couple. They are arguing about who should pay for dinner. The second part follows the yacht cruise. The guests include a Russian oligarch, a British weapons manufacturer, and an elderly couple who are Marxist. The yacht is attacked by pirates, and the captain (Woody Harrelson) is a Marxist alcoholic. The third part follows the survivors, who are stranded on a deserted island. The only person who knows how to survive is Abigail (Dolly De Leon), a Filipino toilet manager. She becomes the leader, and she takes advantage of the wealthy guests. The film is a sharp, funny, and brutal satire of class, wealth, and the super-rich. Triangle of Sadness was a critical and commercial success, earning over $30 million on a $15 million budget. It was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.
