Overview

The Regime is a 2024 political satire miniseries created by Will Tracy for HBO. The series stars Kate Winslet as Chancellor Elena Vernham, the paranoid, unstable, and increasingly tyrannical leader of a fictional Central European country. The series is set over the course of a year, as Elena's regime begins to crumble. She is a hypochondriac who is obsessed with the air quality in her palace. She becomes dependent on a charismatic, manipulative soldier, Herbert Zubak (Matthias Schoenaerts), who she promotes to her personal bodyguard. Herbert encourages Elena's worst impulses, and the regime becomes more and more oppressive. The series is a darkly comedic satire of authoritarianism, following Elena as she becomes increasingly isolated from reality. The series features a memorable performance by Kate Winslet, who disappears into the role, and by Matthias Schoenaerts as the quietly menacing Herbert. The series was a critical success, praised for its writing, its performances, and its timely themes. It is a limited series, so a second season is not expected.
