How to Watch All the Marvel Movies in Order (The Only Guide You Need)

Chronological or release order? Post-credits explained. Here's the definitive, no-nonsense MCU viewing guide.

So you want to watch the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Great choice. Terrible timing — there are now 30+ films and a pile of Disney+ series, and every fan online will give you a different "correct" order. I've watched the whole saga multiple ways, and I'm going to save you the argument: here's the only guide you need.

First-timer? Watch in release order. Always.

I know chronological order sounds logical. It's not — at least not for a first watch. The MCU was designed to be experienced in release order: post-credits scenes tease what's next, reveals land the way the filmmakers intended, and the story builds the way it was built. Watching Captain America: The First Avenger first (chronologically earliest) spoils nothing but gains you nothing either — and you'd hit the weaker early films before you're invested.

Release order, Phase by Phase:

Phase One — The Assembly

  • Iron Man (2008)
  • The Incredible Hulk (2008)
  • Iron Man 2 (2010)
  • Thor (2011)
  • Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
  • The Avengers (2012)

Six films to assemble the team. Iron Man and The Avengers are the standouts; the middle ones are homework, but short homework.

Phase Two — Going Bigger

  • Iron Man 3 (2013)
  • Thor: The Dark World (2013)
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
  • Ant-Man (2015)

Winter Soldier and Guardians are the gems here — one reinvented what a Marvel movie could be, the other proved talking raccoons could carry a blockbuster.

Phase Three — The Payoff

  • Captain America: Civil War (2016)
  • Doctor Strange (2016)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
  • Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
  • Black Panther (2018)
  • Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
  • Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)
  • Captain Marvel (2019)
  • Avengers: Endgame (2019)
  • Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)

This is the Infinity Saga's grand stretch — eleven films building to the two-part finale. Infinity War's ending is the boldest thing Marvel ever did. Endgame's portals scene made my entire theater cheer. Peak blockbuster cinema.

Phase Four and beyond — The Multiverse Saga

After Endgame, the saga gets sprawling: Shang-Chi, Eternals, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the Guardians trilogy capper, The Marvels, Deadpool & Wolverine, Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts* — plus Disney+ series like WandaVision, Loki, and Moon Knight. Quality varies more here, honestly. My advice: watch the ones that interest you; the saga no longer demands completionism.

Done it once? Try chronological order for the rewatch

On a second viewing, chronological order is genuinely fun — you catch how it all connects. The rough sequence: Captain America: The First Avenger (1940s) → Captain Marvel (1995) → Iron Man → Iron Man 2 → Thor → The Avengers → everything else in release order, with the Guardians films and Ant-Man slotted where they fall. Don't overthink the exact placement of the cosmic stuff; close enough is fine.

The post-credits rule

Never skip the credits. Every MCU film has at least one post-credits scene — sometimes two, one mid-credits and one at the very end. They're usually 60 seconds of setup for the next story, and half the fun is the theater collectively gasping. Stay seated. Always.

That's it. Start with Iron Man (2008), follow release order, stay for the credits. Welcome to the next few months of your life.
